Introduction
The Republic of North Macedonia allows emigrants and their descendants up to the first generation to acquire citizenship through naturalization.
According to the Law on Citizenship, an expatriate is considered a citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia who has emigrated from the country to another country, regardless of their gender, race, skin color, national and social origin, political and religious beliefs, property, and social position.
Not only can emigrants from the Republic of North Macedonia acquire citizenship, but their descendants up to the first generation can also do so.
This means that expatriates who have a connection to the Republic of North Macedonia through their ancestry can apply for citizenship, allowing them to retain a connection to their heritage and access the rights and privileges that come with being a citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia.
In relation to this type of application, the expatriate applicant is not required to meet certain requirements that are often necessary in the naturalization process.
They are not required to legally and continuously live in the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia for a certain period of time before submitting their request, nor are they required to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in the Macedonian language.
Additionally, they are not required to have a release from their current citizenship or prove that they will obtain one if they are granted citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia.
