A foreigner who is over 18 years old and does not pose a threat to the security of the country may be eligible to acquire citizenship through naturalization if it is determined to be of special scientific, economic, cultural, sports, or other national interest.

The Government of the Republic of North Macedonia has established criteria for determining what constitutes special interest for the purpose of naturalization. The government will also provide an opinion on the existence of special interest in individual cases.

According to our decree, a special economic interest exists if a foreigner who has submitted a request for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia meets one of the following criteria:

• Invested at least 400,000 euros per person as direct investment in new facilities, with the exception of catering establishments for food and trade facilities, with at least ten permanent employees for a period of at least one year.
• Invested at least 200,000 euros per person, in a period of at least two years, in a private investment fund, under certain conditions.

According to our decree, a special cultural interest exists if a foreigner who has submitted a request for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia meets one of the following criteria:

• With their creativity and their activities over the last five years, they have continuously realized creative activity with top artistic values in the field of fine arts, music and dance, film and drama.
• Is a top expert in matters related to the immediate protection of cultural heritage.
• Is an artist who belongs to the scarce artistic staff of the Republic of North Macedonia.

According to our decree, a special sporting interest exists if a foreigner who has submitted a request for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia meets the following criteria:

• Has achieved high sporting results in the last Olympic cycle.
• Meets the conditions for acquiring the category of world-class athlete in accordance with the law and another regulation is active in the year immediately before the submission of the application for acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia.

According to our decree, a special national interest exists if a foreigner who has submitted a request for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia meets the following criteria:

• Is not an emigrant from the Republic of North Macedonia, nor their descendant up to the first generation.
• Is originally from the Republic of North Macedonia, but lives outside its borders and knows the Macedonian language.
• Has published positive journalistic activity on the history, political and economic development of the Republic of North Macedonia.
• Undertakes activities that affirm the Republic of North Macedonia in the world.
• Is active in the societies and communities of the Republic of North Macedonia abroad.

According to our decree, a special scientific interest exists if a foreigner who has submitted a request for the acquisition of citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia meets one of the following criteria:

• Has achieved scientific-research results at the international level, which have been assessed as a significant benefit for the development of scientific-research activity.
• Performs scientific research activity and has: scientific degree Doctor of Science, published at least six scientific papers in a reference scientific publication in the last five years and participated as head of at least one domestic or international scientific research project.
• Is an innovator of inventions that are significant for the advancement of economic and scientific-technological development.
